Oilfield Service Insurance in Texas

Allen Jones Insurance Agency is an independent insurance agency in Canyon Lake, Texas that insures oilfield service contractors across Texas, comparing multiple carriers for general liability, commercial auto, equipment, workers' comp and umbrella.

Operators will not let you on a lease until your insurance matches their master service agreement, or MSA. Send us the insurance section of your MSA and we will show you what it asks for and what is missing.

General liability

Covers injury and property damage to others from your work on the lease. We write additional insured, waiver of subrogation and primary and noncontributory wording to match the MSA.

Commercial auto

Covers pickups, hotshots, vacuum trucks, water trucks and service rigs driving to and around the lease. We match radius, drivers and what you haul.

Inland marine and equipment

Covers tools, pumps, generators, light towers and other equipment you move from site to site. See our heavy equipment insurance page.

Workers' compensation

Covers medical bills and lost wages if a hand is hurt on the job. Most operators ask for it in the MSA, usually with a waiver of subrogation.

Commercial umbrella

Adds higher limits over your general liability, auto and employers liability. MSAs often ask for umbrella limits well above one policy limit.

Pollution coverage

Standard general liability and auto policies usually exclude pollution. If you haul fluids or work around wells, ask us about pollution coverage so a spill does not fall into a gap between policies.

Where we work

We are based in Canyon Lake and work with businesses across Texas, including the Hill Country, New Braunfels, Boerne and San Antonio. Related pages: Contractor Insurance · Dump Truck Insurance, and everything on our commercial insurance page.

Oilfield Service Insurance FAQ

What insurance does an oilfield service contractor need in Texas?

Most oilfield service contractors carry general liability, commercial auto, workers' comp with employers liability, equipment coverage and an umbrella. Many add pollution coverage. The operator's MSA usually sets the limits and wording, so we start by reading the insurance section of your MSA.

What is an MSA insurance requirement?

A master service agreement, or MSA, is the contract between you and an operator. Its insurance section lists the policies, limits and wording you must carry before you work. It often asks for additional insured, waiver of subrogation and primary and noncontributory wording on your policies.

What does primary and noncontributory mean?

It means your policy pays first for a covered claim from your work, before the operator's own insurance, and the operator's policy does not have to share the cost. Many MSAs ask for it. It has to be on the policy itself, not only typed on the certificate.

What is a waiver of subrogation?

It means your insurance company gives up the right to recover what it paid from the operator or contractor named in the waiver. MSAs often ask for it on general liability, auto and workers' comp. It is added by endorsement, and we match it to your contract.

Does my general liability cover a spill on the lease?

Usually not. Standard general liability and auto policies usually exclude pollution, so a spill can fall into a gap between them. Pollution coverage can help close that gap. Send us your current policies and we will show you where the pollution exclusions are.

What affects the cost of oilfield service insurance?

The main factors are the type of work, payroll and revenue, number of trucks and drivers, the limits your MSA asks for, and your claims history. Higher umbrella limits add cost. We compare several carriers so you see options before you sign a new MSA.
